Why Is My Vape Spitting? Causes and Fixes for Hot E-Liquid Splashback
That sharp, hot hit of e-liquid pinging against the back of your throat — vape spit. It's unpleasant at best and mildly painful at worst. It wastes e-liquid, it can make vaping feel like a chore, and if it keeps happening, something in your setup or technique needs to change. The good news is that vape spitting is almost always fixable once you know which of the common causes applies to you.
What Actually Causes Vape Spitting?
Spitting happens when liquid e-liquid — not vapour — is carried up the airflow tube and into your mouth. Rather than being fully vaporised by the coil, droplets of e-liquid get superheated and ejected. Think of it like fat spitting in a frying pan: too much liquid meeting too much heat, without enough surface area to convert it all cleanly to vapour.
You've Flooded the Coil
This is the most common cause of vape spitting. A flooded coil has more e-liquid in the coil chamber than the cotton can absorb and the wire can vaporise in one hit. The excess liquid sits in the chamber and gets ejected as hot droplets when you fire.
Flooding usually happens when you overfill a pod or tank, when the device has been lying on its side (letting e-liquid seep into the coil beyond the wicking ports), or when a coil has been over-primed during setup.
Fix: Remove the coil and hold it over a piece of paper towel, then blow firmly through the top (airflow end) in short bursts. You'll see the excess liquid expelled. Alternatively, fire the device at a low wattage for a few short puffs without inhaling to burn off the excess. Then take a few gentle puffs and it should clear.
Your E-Liquid Is Too Thin for Your Device
High-powered sub-ohm devices with large coil intake ports are designed for thick, high-VG e-liquids. Using a thin 50/50 or high-PG e-liquid in one of these setups means the wick absorbs liquid far faster than the coil can vaporise it. The coil floods almost every time you fill, leading to persistent spitting.
Fix: Match your e-liquid viscosity to your device. Sub-ohm tanks need 70% VG or higher. Pod kits and lower-powered devices work best with 50/50 or similar thinner blends. If you're not sure what ratio suits your device, check the manufacturer's guidelines.
Condensation in the Airflow Tube
Over time, condensed vapour builds up as a liquid film on the inside walls of the airflow tube — the chimney section between the coil and the mouthpiece. When you draw on the device, this condensed liquid can be pulled into your mouth alongside the vapour.
This type of spit tends to be less hot than coil flooding — it's closer to room temperature — and often feels like a wet rather than burning sensation.
Fix: Unscrew the tank or remove the pod and blow through it (mouthpiece end down) over a paper towel. This expels the condensation from the chimney. Doing this weekly as part of routine maintenance prevents build-up from getting out of hand.
Your Wattage Is Too Low
Insufficient heat means the e-liquid isn't being fully vaporised. Droplets form instead of clean vapour and end up in your mouth. This is common when vapers set a very conservative wattage for battery life reasons, or when the coil's minimum wattage recommendation isn't being met.
Fix: Increase your wattage in small increments until the spitting stops. The ideal wattage for clean vapour production usually sits somewhere in the middle of your coil's recommended range — not right at the bottom.
You're Taking Long, Slow Draws
Very long draws — five or six seconds or more — can pull e-liquid up from the coil faster than it can be vaporised, particularly in lower-powered setups. This leads to liquid being drawn up the chimney alongside the vapour.
Fix: Shorten your draw length to two to three seconds. For MTL (mouth-to-lung) devices, slightly firmer and shorter draws often deliver better results than long, slow pulls.
Quick Fixes for Vape Spitting Right Now
If your vape is spitting right now: blow through the mouthpiece over a paper towel to clear condensation and flooding. Check the fill level — if the tank is almost overfull, let some e-liquid settle or remove a small amount. Fire the device at low wattage without inhaling for a few short bursts to burn off excess liquid. Then increase your wattage slightly if it's sitting at the lower end of the recommended range.
Preventing Spitting Long-Term
Store the device upright, not on its side. Use an e-liquid that matches your device's requirements. Keep wattage within the coil's recommended range. Clean the airflow tube regularly. Don't overfill the tank or pod.
Persistent spitting that doesn't respond to any of these fixes can indicate a coil that's reaching the end of its life — the wick structure degrades unevenly over time, leading to inconsistent flooding. If you've tried everything else, swap the coil out.
