Why Vape Battery Safety Matters More Than You Think

In 2023, lithium-ion batteries in discarded vapes caused an estimated 700+ fires in UK waste facilities and bin lorries. Leaving a vape plugged in for hours after it's hit 100% causes "trickle charging" — small bursts of current that gradually degrade the battery and can cause swelling over months of repeated abuse.

  • Good: Room temperature, dry, out of direct sunlight. A drawer or a shelf is fine.
  • Bad: Inside a car on a hot day. Car interiors can hit 60°C+ in summer, which is dangerous for any lithium-ion battery and can cause permanent damage even without a fire.
  • Bad: In a pocket alongside metal objects (keys, coins). If the device terminals contact metal, you can create a short circuit — the most common cause of pocket vape fires.
  • Worst: Near a heat source (radiator, oven, fireplace).

What to Do If a Vape Battery Overheats

  1. Don't touch it with bare hands — a venting lithium-ion battery can reach 200°C+ in seconds.
  2. Move it outside or onto concrete/tile using oven gloves or tongs if you can do so safely. Get it away from anything flammable.
  3. Don't use water on a battery already on fire — it can intensify the reaction. Sand or a Class D fire extinguisher is the correct response. If neither is available, smother with a non-flammable item (metal bucket inverted over it).
  4. If the fire spreads or you can't safely move it, evacuate the room, close the door behind you, and call 999.
  5. Ventilate after — lithium-ion smoke is toxic. Open windows, leave the room for at least 30 minutes.

Disposing of Vapes and Batteries Properly
