SMOK Nord 5 Review: Does the Nord Series Still Lead in 2026?
The SMOK Nord series has been one of the most enduring pod kit lines in vaping. The original Nord created the blueprint for the high-performance pod mod hybrid — adjustable wattage, multiple coil compatibility, and pod kit convenience. The Nord 5 brings 80W maximum output, a 2000mAh battery, and Nord Pro coil compatibility to the table. But in a market where competition is fierce and alternatives have caught up significantly, does the Nord 5 still justify its position?
Design and Build
The Nord 5 is a pod mod — larger and heavier than a pure pod kit, but smaller than a traditional box mod. The design is clean and professional, with SMOK's signature styling that walks the line between understated and premium. The grip is comfortable for extended holds, and the button layout is logical.
The display screen shows wattage, battery level, puff count, and coil resistance — a useful set of readouts for a device at this power level. The pod attaches magnetically and the pod locking switch prevents accidental pod removal. Build quality is solid throughout.
Performance and Coil Range
The Nord 5 uses Nord Pro coils, which span a range from 0.15 ohm (mesh for high-wattage DTL use) through to 0.6 ohm and 0.9 ohm (MTL and RDTL options). This makes the Nord 5 genuinely versatile — you can use it as a powerful DTL device with shortfills or as a flavour-focused pod kit with nic salts by simply swapping coils.
At 80W maximum, the Nord 5 handles demanding sub-ohm coils without strain. The lower resistance mesh coils deliver impressive cloud and flavour production for a pod format. For vapers who have graduated from basic pod kits and want more power without committing to a full box mod, the Nord 5 is a logical next step.
Battery
The 2000mAh battery is above average for the pod mod category. Most vapers will get through a full day comfortably even at mid-range wattage. At maximum wattage on low-resistance coils, battery drain is faster — heavier users may need to charge during the day. USB-C charging is standard.
Where It Falls Short
The Nord 5 is heavier and bulkier than pure pod kits like the Caliburn G3 or Xlim Pro. If you primarily vape at lower wattages with nic salts and don't need 80W capability, you're carrying a larger device for power you won't use. The Nord 5 makes most sense for vapers who genuinely use the full wattage range — those who want both a high-power shortfill vape and occasional nic salt use from the same device.
Verdict
The SMOK Nord 5 remains a strong performer in the pod mod hybrid category and justifies the upgrade from pure pod kits for vapers who want genuine power flexibility. The coil range versatility is excellent. For vapers who need only low-wattage MTL performance, a slimmer pure pod kit is the better choice.
