How to Set Up Your First Vape Kit Step by Step

Around seven in ten new vapers experience a burnt, unpleasant taste in their very first session. Nearly every single time, it comes down to one missed step. This guide makes sure that doesn't happen to you — and gets you from unboxing to a proper first puff without the frustration that puts so many beginners off.

Step 1: Charge Your Device Before Anything Else

Most devices ship from the factory with a partial charge, but you shouldn't trust that it's enough for a proper first session. Plug your device in via USB-C (most modern kits use the same cable as Android phones), charge it to full, then disconnect. Getting a complete charge from the start also helps establish healthy battery habits from day one.

While it charges, take a few minutes to read the small card or leaflet that came in the box. Most kits come with a basic instruction sheet — even a quick skim will tell you whether your device is button-activated or draw-activated, and whether it has any safety features you should know about.

Step 2: Fill Your Pod or Tank Correctly

For refillable pods: look for the fill port, which is usually on the side of the pod or accessed from the bottom. Don't fill through the mouthpiece hole or the airflow hole — those are not the fill ports and you'll make a mess. Fill slowly to the max fill line and stop. Overfilling is one of the main causes of leaking.

Some pods have a silicone stopper over the fill port — pull this back or remove it, fill, then replace it firmly before inserting the pod into the device. Screw-top tanks work similarly — fill from the top or side fill port, don't overfill, and close the port before inverting the tank.

If you're starting with a pre-filled pod or rechargeable disposable, skip this step — it's already done for you.

Step 3: Prime the Coil (This Is the Step People Skip)

Priming the coil means saturating the wicking material inside the coil with e-liquid before applying any heat. This is the step that prevents the burnt taste — and it's the one most new vapers either don't know about or skip because it sounds unnecessary.

For devices with replaceable coils: before installing the coil, add three or four drops of e-liquid directly to the cotton wicking ports visible on the side of the coil. Install the coil, fill your tank, and then leave it to sit for five to ten minutes before taking your first puff.

For pod kits with pre-built coils inside the pod: fill the pod, leave it for five minutes, then take three or four gentle puffs without activating the device — just draw lightly through the mouthpiece with no button press or airflow activation. This pulls liquid through the cotton naturally. Then you're ready to vape properly.

Step 4: Take Your First Puff and Adjust

Start with a slow, gentle draw. Hold the vapour in your mouth for a second, then inhale it down. Don't take a fast, aggressive pull — it floods the coil and you'll either get spitting or a flooded, gurgling sensation. Slow and deliberate is the right technique, especially in the first few puffs.

Give yourself a gap of at least twenty to thirty seconds between puffs in your first session. This lets the coil re-saturate between hits and prevents dry burn even on a well-primed coil. After ten minutes of gentle use, you'll get a much better sense of how the device performs.

If you taste anything burnt or acrid, stop immediately. Check your liquid level and let the device sit for two minutes before trying again. A good-tasting first puff is your reward for priming properly.

Step 5: Basic Ongoing Maintenance

Once you're up and running, a few habits keep everything performing well. Top up your liquid before it runs completely dry — vaping on an almost-empty pod damages the coil. Change your coil or pod insert when flavour drops off or a faint burnt note creeps in, typically every one to two weeks for regular vapers.

Clean the contacts between your pod and device occasionally with a dry cloth or cotton bud. Keep the device out of extreme heat (don't leave it in a hot car) and store it upright when possible to prevent liquid from migrating into the wrong parts of the pod.

That really is all the maintenance a basic pod kit needs. VaperzHub stocks replacement coils, pods and accessories for all the major brands — browse at vaperzhub.co.uk to keep your kit running well.
