How to Prime a Vape Coil Correctly (And Never Have a Burnt Hit Again)

Seven in ten burnt first puffs come down to one missed step: priming. If you've ever installed a brand-new coil, taken an eager first drag, and been hit with that horrible dry, charred taste, you know exactly what a dry hit feels like. The good news is it's entirely avoidable. Once you know how to prime a vape coil properly, burnt hits become a distant memory.

This guide covers the full process, explains why it matters, and flags the most common mistakes even experienced vapers make.

What Does Priming a Coil Actually Mean?

Inside every replaceable vape coil, there's a small piece of cotton wicking material. This cotton soaks up your e-liquid and delivers it to the heated coil wire. When you install a brand-new coil, that cotton is completely dry. Fire it up immediately and the cotton scorches before the e-liquid has a chance to saturate it — that's your burnt hit.

Priming simply means getting the cotton wet before your first use. It sounds obvious, but it's a step countless vapers skip — either because they didn't know, or because they're impatient (completely understandable).

Step-by-Step: How to Prime a Vape Coil

Step 1 — Inspect the coil. Before anything else, look at the coil. You'll see small ports around the sides — these are the intake holes where e-liquid enters and saturates the cotton. Make sure they're clear and undamaged.

Step 2 — Apply e-liquid drops to each intake port. Using your e-liquid bottle, place one or two drops directly into each side port. You're pre-saturating the outer cotton by hand. Don't flood it — two drops per port is enough. The cotton should look visibly wet through each hole.

Step 3 — Drop e-liquid down the centre. Look down the top of the coil and you'll see the coil wire inside. Add a single drop of e-liquid directly into this centre hole to pre-saturate the inner cotton as well.

Step 4 — Assemble your tank and fill. Screw the primed coil into your tank, fill with your chosen e-liquid, and replace the top cap. Make sure everything is seated properly to avoid leaks.

Step 5 — Wait at least 5 to 10 minutes. This is the step most people skip, and it's crucial. Leave the tank sitting upright for at least five minutes — ideally ten. E-liquid needs time to fully saturate the cotton through gravity. If you're using a thick, high-VG e-liquid, wait fifteen minutes.

Step 6 — Take gentle dry puffs. Before turning your device on, take five to ten slow, gentle puffs without pressing the fire button. Cover the airflow with your finger to create suction. This pulls e-liquid through the coil and helps even out the saturation throughout the cotton.

Step 7 — Start at lower wattage. If your device has adjustable wattage, start at the bottom of the coil's recommended range. Take a few short puffs, then gradually work up to your preferred setting over the first few sessions. This breaks the coil in gently and significantly extends its lifespan.

Why Thick E-Liquids Need Extra Attention

High-VG e-liquids — anything above 70% VG — are thicker and slower to wick. If you're using a shortfill or high-VG blend, the standard five-minute wait usually isn't enough. Give it fifteen minutes and really work those dry puffs. Some vapers add a few drops of a thinner nic shot (50/50 PG/VG) to the coil first, which helps the initial saturation before filling with the thicker mix.

Pod kits designed for nic salts typically use 50/50 e-liquids, which wick much faster. Five minutes and a few dry puffs is usually all you need for these.

How to Tell If Your Coil Is Properly Primed

A well-primed coil gives you clean, full flavour from the very first puff. No harshness, no burnt edge — just smooth vapour. If the first hit tastes slightly muted, that's normal. The coil just needs a few more puffs to reach its potential. What you want to avoid is any charred, dry, or synthetic-tasting vapour on that first hit. If you taste burnt straight away, the coil may already be damaged.

Common Priming Mistakes

Overfilling the ports — Too much e-liquid into the side holes can flood the coil and cause spitting or gurgling. Two drops per port is plenty.

Not waiting long enough — Impatience is the number one cause of burnt coils. Set a timer if you need to. It genuinely makes a difference.

Starting at full wattage — Hitting the top of your wattage range before the coil is broken in puts real stress on the cotton. Always start lower and work up.

Using the wrong coil — Make sure the replacement coil is designed for your specific device. A coil that fits physically but has the wrong resistance rating will underperform and burn out faster.

How Long Will a Properly Primed Coil Last?

A correctly primed coil in a typical setup lasts one to three weeks, depending on how often you vape and which e-liquids you use. Sweeter dessert flavours burn through coils faster because sucralose caramelises on the wire. If you're going through coils in just a few days despite careful priming, switching to a less sweet e-liquid can help considerably.

Signs it's time for a replacement: persistent burnt taste even with fresh e-liquid, noticeably weaker flavour, or visible dark gunky residue when you unscrew the coil.
