8 Proven Ways to Get More Flavour From Your Vape

Your favourite e-liquid used to taste incredible. Now it's almost flat. The flavour is technically still there — you can just about detect it — but the intensity you had when you first tried it has gone. The liquid hasn't changed. But something has. This guide breaks down the eight most effective ways to get more flavour from your vape, covering everything from coil choices to vaper's tongue to the way you actually draw on the device.

1. Replace Your Coil — It's Probably Gunked Up

This is the answer in the majority of cases. Coils accumulate residue from e-liquid over time, particularly from sweet, dessert-type flavours. As the residue builds up, it coats the coil wire and the cotton wick, dulling every subsequent hit. Vapers often adjust to the gradual decline without noticing how much flavour they've lost — until they install a fresh coil and the difference is stark.

If your vape has tasted flat for more than a few days, swap the coil first before trying anything else. It's the quickest and most reliable fix. A fresh coil on a clean tank can make even a familiar e-liquid taste like a new discovery.

2. Prime the New Coil Properly

A new coil that hasn't been primed correctly underperforms from the very first puff. Under-saturated cotton produces a muted, slightly harsh flavour that doesn't represent what the e-liquid actually tastes like. Take the extra ten minutes to add drops to each intake port, fill the tank, let it sit, and take a few gentle dry puffs before firing. A properly primed coil delivers noticeably better flavour from day one.

3. Try a Higher PG Ratio E-Liquid

PG (propylene glycol) carries flavour more efficiently than VG (vegetable glycerine). VG produces more vapour volume, but the flavour compounds are more diluted in a high-VG blend. If you've been using a 70/30 VG/PG shortfill and the flavour feels thin, try a 50/50 or 60/40 blend of the same flavour profile. The difference in flavour intensity can be significant, particularly on pod kits and lower-powered devices where high-VG e-liquids are often a mismatch anyway.

4. Clean Your Tank Between Flavour Changes

Switching from a heavy dessert flavour to a light menthol without cleaning the tank means you're vaping through a mixture of both. The residue from the previous e-liquid contaminates every puff of the new one. A quick warm-water rinse between flavour changes takes five minutes and makes each e-liquid taste exactly as it should, without any muddying from what came before.

5. Adjust Your Airflow

Airflow has a significant impact on flavour intensity. More airflow dilutes the vapour with air, reducing flavour concentration but producing bigger, cooler clouds. Less airflow concentrates the vapour, giving a warmer, more intense flavour hit but smaller, denser clouds.

If flavour is your priority, try closing the airflow down slightly from wherever it currently sits. Don't close it completely — that causes overheating — but a half-closed airflow often delivers a noticeably stronger flavour hit. Find the point where flavour is at its best without the vapour feeling too hot or harsh.

6. Drop Your Wattage Slightly

Counter-intuitively, lower wattage often produces better flavour. Higher wattages vaporise e-liquid very quickly, but the rapid heat can overpower subtler flavour notes. A slightly lower wattage gives the e-liquid more time to be heated evenly, often producing a richer, more complex result. If you're at 40 watts, try 35. If you're at 25, try 20. Experiment in small increments and pay attention to the difference.

7. Take a Break — Vaper's Tongue Is Real

Vaper's tongue is the informal term for olfactory fatigue — your brain essentially stops registering familiar smells and tastes when it's exposed to them continuously. If you've been vaping the same e-liquid every day for weeks or months, your senses may have simply stopped processing it at full intensity.

The fix: switch to a completely different flavour profile for a few days. Go from fruit to menthol, or from dessert to tobacco. After a few days away, return to your usual flavour. Most vapers are genuinely surprised by how much more intense it tastes after a short break. Staying well hydrated also helps — dehydration dulls taste perception, and vaping itself is mildly dehydrating.

8. Try Hardware Designed for Flavour

Not all hardware is equal when it comes to flavour reproduction. Devices with restricted airflow and MTL (mouth-to-lung) draw styles tend to deliver better flavour per puff than wide-open DTL setups. Pod kits like the Oxva Xlim, Caliburn G3, and Uwell Caliburn series are designed specifically to produce excellent flavour with nic salts. If you're using an older, basic device, upgrading to one of these can make your current e-liquids taste significantly better without changing anything else about your setup.

Bonus: E-Liquid Freshness Matters More Than You Think

E-liquid that's been sitting in a hot car, near a window, or past its best-before date will taste flat regardless of what device you use. Heat, light, and air all degrade the flavour compounds over time. Store e-liquids in a cool, dark place and check the date on the bottle. A fresh bottle of the same flavour can taste remarkably different from a degraded one — it's worth the comparison.
