How to Fill a Vape Tank: A Complete Guide for Beginners

You've got your new kit and a fresh bottle of e-liquid — but how do you actually fill the tank without making a mess, flooding the coil, or leaving air pockets that cause dry hits? It's genuinely one of those things that nobody explains properly, and getting it slightly wrong leads to leaks, gurgling, or a ruined first coil.

This guide covers top-fill tanks, bottom-fill tanks, and refillable pod kits — plus the mistakes that aren't obvious until you've already made them.

Top-Fill vs Bottom-Fill Tanks: Know What You've Got

Older tank designs required you to unscrew the base to fill from the bottom — fiddly, messy, and easy to get wrong. Most tanks produced after 2020 use top-fill designs, where a cap on the top slides or unscrews to reveal the fill port. This is considerably easier and less prone to spillage.

If you're not sure which type you have, look for a cap or slide mechanism at the top of the tank. If there's nothing there, check the base. Pod kits are typically filled from the top of the pod itself, often via a small silicone-sealed port on the side or top.

Step-by-Step: Filling a Top-Fill Tank

Step 1 — Make sure the tank is assembled and the coil is installed before filling. Don't try to fill a partially disassembled tank.

Step 2 — Open the fill port. Most top-fill tanks have either a twist-open cap or a slide mechanism. Twist caps usually need a quarter or half turn. Don't force it.

Step 3 — Tilt the tank at about 45 degrees. Insert your e-liquid bottle tip into the fill port and squeeze slowly. Angling the tank lets e-liquid run down the inside wall rather than dropping directly onto the coil, which reduces the risk of flooding.

Step 4 — Fill to just below the maximum fill line. Leave a small air pocket at the top — about two millimetres. This air gap maintains pressure balance. Filling completely to the brim often causes leaking.

Step 5 — Close the fill port firmly and stand the tank upright. Give the e-liquid a few minutes to soak into the coil before your first puff.

Step-by-Step: Filling a Bottom-Fill Tank

Step 1 — Unscrew the base of the tank from the glass section. Hold the glass section steady so e-liquid doesn't spill.

Step 2 — You'll see the coil in the centre and the fill channel running around it. Tilt the bottle and fill into the fill channel — not down the centre chimney. Filling down the centre puts e-liquid directly into the airflow tube, causing flooding and spitting.

Step 3 — Fill to just below the max line, screw the base back on firmly, then stand the tank upright.

Step 4 — Wipe any excess e-liquid from the threads before reassembly to keep connections clean.

Filling Refillable Pod Kits

Pod kits vary in design but most use one of two approaches: a fill port on the side of the pod sealed with a silicone bung, or a top-fill port that becomes accessible when you remove the mouthpiece.

For silicone bung ports: use the tip of your e-liquid bottle to push the bung aside and fill slowly. The port is small and flooding is easy if you rush. For top-fill pods: remove the mouthpiece, locate the fill hole (usually clearly marked), and fill carefully without getting e-liquid into the separate airflow chimney hole next to it.

Common Filling Mistakes

Filling down the centre chimney — The central tube is the airflow path, not the fill channel. Putting e-liquid down it causes instant flooding and spitting. This is the single most common filling mistake for beginners.

Overfilling — No air gap means no pressure balance. E-liquid has nowhere to go except out through the airflow holes. Always leave that small gap.

Vaping immediately — Give the e-liquid at least thirty seconds to a minute to settle before taking the first puff, especially with a new coil. Even better, wait five minutes and take a few gentle dry puffs first.

Mixing incompatible e-liquids — If you're topping up an existing tank, use the same e-liquid or one with a similar VG/PG ratio. Mixing a thick high-VG shortfill into a pod kit coil designed for 50/50 can cause wicking problems.

Which E-Liquid Should You Use?

Pod kits and low-powered pen devices work best with 50/50 or similar thin e-liquids, which wick easily through the small intake ports in pod coils. Nic salts at 10–20mg work perfectly with these devices.

Sub-ohm tanks and box mods need high-VG blends — 70/30 or above. Shortfills with a nic shot added are the most popular choice for these setups.
