How to Clean a Vape Tank Properly (Step-by-Step Guide)

A dirty vape tank is the number one reason experienced vapers complain about off flavours. Not a bad e-liquid, not a worn coil — a tank that hasn't been cleaned in weeks. Residue from previous e-liquids builds up on the tank walls, inside the chimney, and on the coil housing, and that residue affects every single puff you take. If your vape tastes vaguely of everything you've ever vaped, this guide is for you.

Cleaning a vape tank properly takes about ten minutes and makes a noticeable difference to flavour quality and coil longevity. Here's how to do it right.

Why Cleaning Your Vape Tank Matters

E-liquids leave behind trace residue with every use. Over time, this builds up into a slightly sticky, darkened film that coats the inside of your tank. Sweet, dessert, and fruit flavours are the worst offenders — the sugars in them caramelise and stick. When you switch e-liquids without cleaning, the new flavour gets contaminated by the old one. The result is a muddy, flat taste that no amount of good e-liquid can fix.

Regular cleaning also extends the life of your coils. A cleaner tank means less residue transferring to the cotton, which means the coil stays fresher longer.

What You'll Need

For a standard clean: warm water, a small bowl, paper towels or a clean dry cloth. For a deep clean: warm water plus a small amount of unflavoured vodka or food-grade propylene glycol, which breaks down e-liquid residue without leaving any taste behind. A small bottle brush or cotton bud helps get into tighter spaces.

The Quick Clean: For Regular Maintenance

Step 1 — Empty any remaining e-liquid from the tank. Don't mix old e-liquid back into your bottle.

Step 2 — Disassemble the tank as far as it goes. Most tanks separate into a base, glass section, top cap, and coil. Remove the coil and set it aside — don't get it wet.

Step 3 — Rinse each part under warm running water. The glass is fine to rinse fully. The metal top cap and base can be rinsed too. Avoid the coil and any electronic components.

Step 4 — Shake off excess water and lay the pieces on a clean paper towel to air dry. Give it at least twenty minutes before reassembly, or longer if you can.

Step 5 — Reassemble, install a fresh coil, prime it properly, fill with e-liquid, and you're ready to go.

The Deep Clean: For Stubborn Residue or Flavour Switching

If you're switching to a completely different e-liquid flavour category — going from a sweet dessert to a crisp menthol, for example — or if you've noticed significant dark residue build-up, a deeper clean is worth the extra effort.

Step 1 — Disassemble the tank as above.

Step 2 — Fill a small bowl with warm water and add a small splash of unflavoured vodka (the cheapest supermarket own-brand works perfectly). Submerge the metal and glass components and let them soak for five to ten minutes.

Step 3 — Gently scrub any stubborn residue with a cotton bud or small brush. Pay particular attention to the threads where the coil screws in, and the inside of the chimney section.

Step 4 — Rinse thoroughly under warm water to remove any vodka trace.

Step 5 — Dry completely before reassembly. Any moisture left inside can dilute your e-liquid or interfere with the coil's performance.

Cleaning Pod Systems

Refillable pod systems are generally easier to clean than traditional tanks because they have fewer components. Remove the pod from the device and rinse the pod chamber (not the coil section) with warm water. For the device body itself, wipe the connections with a dry cotton bud to remove any e-liquid residue around the pod slot.

Don't submerge the device body in water. It's not waterproof, and this will damage the battery and electronics.

How Often Should You Clean?

As a minimum: every time you change your coil. This lines up cleaning with coil replacement and keeps flavour fresh throughout. If you swap between very different flavours frequently, clean more often — even a quick rinse between fills makes a noticeable difference. If you mostly stick to one flavour, every two to three weeks is reasonable.

A clean tank simply performs better. It's one of those simple maintenance habits that takes almost no time but has a real impact on your daily vaping experience.
