Vape Coil Resistance Explained: What Ohms Actually Mean for Your Vape

You've seen the numbers on coil packaging — 0.3 ohm, 0.6 ohm, 1.2 ohm — and maybe wondered what they actually mean for your vaping experience. Coil resistance is one of those technical-sounding concepts that's actually pretty simple once you understand the underlying idea. And once you understand it, you can make much better decisions about which coils and which devices to use.

What Is Resistance?

Resistance is a measure of how much a material restricts the flow of electricity. In vaping, the coil wire inside your coil head has a resistance measured in ohms (Ω). A lower ohm reading means the wire resists electricity less — which means more current flows through it, which means more heat is generated. A higher ohm reading means more resistance, less current, less heat.

In practical terms: low-resistance coils produce more heat, more vapour, and are typically used at higher wattages. High-resistance coils produce less heat, less vapour, and work at lower wattages. Both have their place.

Sub-Ohm vs Above-Ohm Coils

The terminology you'll see most often in vaping is 'sub-ohm', which simply means a coil with a resistance below 1.0 ohm. Sub-ohm coils are designed for direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping — taking big draws directly into your lungs — and produce large clouds with warm vapour. They require higher-wattage devices and work best with high-VG, lower-nicotine e-liquids.

Coils above 1.0 ohm are designed for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping — drawing vapour into your mouth first, then inhaling, mimicking the action of smoking a cigarette. These coils work at lower wattages, produce tighter, cooler draws, and work well with higher-nicotine nic salt e-liquids. If you're an ex-smoker, MTL coils are almost certainly a better starting point.

Common Resistance Ratings and What They Mean

0.1 to 0.3 ohm — Very low resistance. High wattage required (typically 60–150W). Large clouds, warm vapour, DTL only. Suitable for experienced vapers who enjoy cloud chasing. Not recommended for beginners or heavy nicotine users.

0.4 to 0.6 ohm — Low resistance. Moderate-to-high wattage (typically 25–60W). Good vapour production, warm draw. Versatile range suitable for shortfill e-liquids. Common on pod-mod hybrid devices.

0.8 to 1.0 ohm — Medium resistance. Lower wattage (typically 10–25W). Good balance of flavour and vapour. Works well with both 50/50 and higher-PG e-liquids. Popular on pod kits.

1.0 to 1.5 ohm — High resistance. Very low wattage (typically 8–16W). Tight, cool MTL draw. Excellent flavour intensity. Ideal for nic salts and ex-smokers. Very efficient on battery.

Above 1.5 ohm — Very high resistance, sometimes referred to as 'high ohm' vaping. Produces minimal vapour and a tight draw very close to a cigarette. Less common in mainstream kits but popular among vapers who want the closest possible cigarette experience.

Does Lower Resistance Always Mean Better Performance?

Not at all — it depends entirely on what you're trying to get out of your vape. Lower resistance means more vapour and warmer draws, which suits cloud chasers and DTL vapers. But for flavour intensity, MTL vaping, or replicating the feel of smoking, higher-resistance coils often perform better.

Using a sub-ohm coil with nic salt e-liquid at 20mg/ml is also a genuinely uncomfortable experience — the hit is far too intense for that nicotine concentration. Matching coil resistance to your nicotine level and vaping style is as important as matching the e-liquid to the device.

Temperature Control and Resistance

Some advanced devices support temperature control (TC) vaping, which monitors coil resistance in real time to prevent overheating. TC coils are typically made from specific materials like nickel, titanium, or stainless steel (labelled Ni200, Ti, or SS316L), which have resistance values that change predictably with temperature. TC vaping is a step beyond basic wattage mode and not essential for most vapers, but it's worth knowing it exists.
