50/50 vs High VG E-Liquid: What's the Real Difference for Your Setup?

One of the most persistent misconceptions in vaping is that high-VG e-liquid is always better — more natural, more vapour, better experience. In reality, putting a 70VG+ e-liquid in the wrong device is one of the most reliable ways to burn a coil prematurely and get a frustrating vaping experience. The right ratio depends entirely on your hardware. Here's how to get it right.

50/50 E-Liquid: What It Does and When It's Right

A 50/50 blend (equal parts vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol) is the workhorse format of the pod kit world. The equal balance creates a liquid that's thin enough to wick quickly through tight coil cotton in high-resistance pods, produces a clear and prominent throat hit from the PG content, and delivers flavour with good accuracy and intensity.

The 50/50 ratio is appropriate for: all pod kits with coils above 1 ohm, vape pens with similar coil specifications, and any MTL-style device. Nic salt e-liquids are typically formulated at or near 50/50 and perform consistently in this hardware. If you're not sure which ratio your device needs, 50/50 is the safe default — it works in essentially all standard vaping hardware.

High VG E-Liquid (70VG and Above): What It Does and When It's Right

High-VG e-liquid is thicker, smoother in the throat, and produces significantly more vapour per puff. The lower PG content reduces throat hit sharpness — which is actually desirable for DTL vapers who take larger puffs and don't need a strong hit to enjoy the experience. The increased vapour density in a sub-ohm coil at higher wattage creates that characteristic large, dense cloud that defines the cloud-chasing experience.

High-VG is appropriate for: sub-ohm tanks and hardware with coils below 0.8 ohm, box mods running at 40+ watts, and pod mods with open-airflow coil options. Shortfill e-liquids are almost always high-VG by design. At 60–100W through a 0.15 ohm mesh coil, a 70VG+ e-liquid transforms — the flavour intensity and vapour production are genuinely different from what the same flavour produces in a pod kit.

What Happens When You Get It Wrong

High-VG liquid in a pod kit: the thick liquid can't wick fast enough through the tight cotton in a 1 ohm+ coil. The result is a dry, burnt sensation that most new vapers have experienced at some point and attribute to a faulty coil when it's actually a liquid mismatch. This is probably the most common e-liquid mistake in the beginner market.

50/50 in a sub-ohm DTL setup at high wattage: less dramatic but still suboptimal. The higher PG content at elevated temperatures can produce a harsh, scratchy throat sensation. The thinner liquid also vapourises less efficiently in wide-bore coils designed for thicker material.

The Simple Rule
